Quick Tips for Getting started on Zoom

By now, many of us have heard stories about unintentional awkward moments during web meetings. Here are some tips to get you started on Zoom and help you avoid awkward moments.

  • Make sure you are using a reliable internet connection.
  • You will need a web cam and microphone to participate.
  • Make sure to have Zoom installed on your browser prior to the start of the meeting.
  • It can be helpful to let anyone in your household know ahead of time that you will be in video call at a certain time in a specific room.
  • Find a quiet place to join the meeting.
  • To cut down on background noise, mute your microphone when you aren't speaking.
  • If you need to leave your computer for a moment during a meeting, it can help to stop your video as well as your mute your audio. You can do this by clicking on the microphone and video icons in the lower left. Once your mic is muted and your video stopped, there will be a red line through the icons.
  • You can participate by using your smart phone, if needed. There is a zoom app available for both Android and iOS.
  • If you haven’t yet downloaded and logged into Zoom, it may help to watch this video and then enter a test meeting.

  • Dress appropriately for the meeting.
  • Lastly, never take your laptop, phone, tablet to the bathroom during a meeting even if you think it's muted and the video is turned off.
